What Will My Assessment Involve? You may have been referred for a DriveABLE assessment by your general practitioner, specialist, allied health professional or family member. Whoever referred you, they are concerned about your safety and the safety of other road users due to your medical condition(s) or the medications that you are currently taking.
In many cases, just because you have a chronic condition it does not automatically mean that you can no longer continue to drive. The important thing is to have appropriate testing through DriveABLE to ensure that you are not putting yourself or others at unnecessary risk. The DriveABLE assessment will evaluate the mental abilities needed for safe driving such as judgement, reaction times, memory & attention. It consists of an office based test using a simple computer. You do not require any experience with computers in order to pass the test. All you are required to do is either touch the screen or press a button. All of the test items will be explained to you prior to attempting them, and you will also have opportunities to practice before being assessed.
Your results are only compared to those of healthy, competent drivers in your own age bracket. The DriveABLE tests are highly accurate in predicting a person's on road performance abilities. Therefore, in many cases the in office assessment may be all that is required. This part of the assessment will take approximately 40 minutes - 1 hour. Depending on the outcome of this office based assessment, you may also require an on-road evaluation. You will be informed on the day of your appointment whether this is necessary and a time will be scheduled for you.
The DriveABLE on road test is different from the standard tests that licencing authorities perform. The standard tests have been shown to be inappropriate for assessing experienced drivers. The DriveABLE on road test was specifically developed to evaluate experienced drivers and only scores those errors that are known to be related to reduced competence rather than just bad habit errors that all drivers tend to make. You do not need to provide your own vehicle for the on road test as all evaluations are conducted in a DriveABLE dual control vehicle. Whether or not you are familiar with the area in which the test is conducted will not affect the outcome of your assessment. The duration of the on-road test is usually around 40 minutes.
Please ensure that you bring the following items with you to your assessment:
It is important that you do not drive yourself to your appointment & that you refrain from driving until you have the results of your assessment. |
