DriveABLE Referral Guide

Individuals of all ages whose driving competence is questionable due to a medical condition, medication or a natural decline affecting cognitive abilities are appropriate for referral. Several conditions are red flags for driving impairment. The most common conditions that prompt a referral to DriveABLE are listed below. These conditions are associated with increased crash risk & cognitive changes affecting driving ability.

Health professionals working with patients who have any of the above chronic medical conditions should use the SIMARD MD screening test to determine whether a formal driving evaluation is required. If the outcome of the screening test indicates that the individual is medically at-risk, a referral to DriveABLE should be made.

  • Doctor-500 * All individuals being referred for an assessment should be as healthy as possible at the time of the evaluation.

  • * Post surgical patients should delay assessment until they have fully recovered from surgery

  • * Patients who have significant physical disabilities (that would require vehicle modifications or retraining) in the absence of cognitive impairment are not assessed by DriveABLE. Referrals of drivers with physical disabilities should be redirected to a driver trained Occupational Therapist.
