Fitness-to-Drive Assessments
Medical diagnosis and clinical judgment are poor and unreliable predictors of an individuals' functional capacity to drive a vehicle. Instead, an evidence based assessment is necessary to ensure that accurate decisions are made about fitness to drive. DriveABLE's fitness to drive evaluations use comprehensive, science based assessment tools developed specifically to identify & assess a driver's ability to drive safely. The evaluations are designed for individuals with chronic medical conditions that are associated with cognitive impairment.
The Screen for the Identifcation of Medically At-Risk, Cognitively Impaired Drivers (SIMARD MD) is a 5 minute pen and paper test with high sensitivity and specificity in identfying medically at risk drivers. Those drivers identified by the SIMARD MD as potentially having impaired driving capacity can then be referred for further assessment (Level 2). Please click here to access the SIMARD MD screening tool for use in your clincal practice. Level 2: Off-Road Cognitive Assessment The Level 2, in-office testing utilises the DriveABLE Cognitive Assessment Tool (DCAT ). The DCAT is a computer based test that assesses the cognitive abilities relevant for driving and is highly predictive of actual on-road driving performance. A three tiered outcome is used: pass, fail and indeterminate. Only those individuals who are indeterminate on the Level 2 assessment require progression to the Level 3 assessment. Please click here to see a demonstration video of the DCAT
For those individuals who require an on-road evaluation to further clarify driving competence, the DriveABLE On-Road Evaluation (DORE) is used. The DORE is a specialized on-road assessment that offers the most accurate science based determination of whether a medically at-risk driver's skills have been impaired to an unsafe degree. The DORE allows an unprecedented degree of standardization & quality assurance through the use of an external criterion with known relationship to driver performance. Therefore objective results are achieved irrespective of location and assessor.
