DriveABLE On-Road Driving Evaluation ![]()
In cases where driving competence requires further clarification following in-office assessment, the DriveABLE On-Road Evaluation (DORE) is used. Unlike standard road tests which have been shown to be unsuitable for the evaluation of experienced drivers, the DORE has been developed through extensive research as an objective, evidence based alternative. The development research identified the driving errors that are markers of competence decline as well as the conditions necessary to reveal these competence errors. This information was then translated into rules defining the requirements for road course layout and pass/fail criterion. In developing the DORE, emphasis was placed on achieving the unprecedented degree of standardisation required for licensing purposes. This was accomplished through the use of a criterion (the DCAT) external to the driving task, against which the performance on any particular road course can be measured. Therefore, objective results and consistency are achieved, irrespective of course location and assessor.
DORE is the only on-road evaluation developed through extensive scientific research and
explicitly designed to determine medical competence to drive for the experienced driver.
On-road assessments can be obtained through many different sources: private driving schools, assessment centers and the Department of Transportation. However, these facilities use standard driving examinations developed for entry level, novice drivers and are inappropriate for determining medical competence to drive. Studies have shown that as many as 1 in 3 healthy, competent drivers fail standard road tests used by licensing departments. Such tests were not designed to evaluate experienced drivers & penalise people for errors that are actually just bad habits common to many drivers, rather than being an indication of reduced competence. Conversely, as standard road tests are designed to evaluate basic driving skills which have been overlearnt by experienced drivers, some people whose competence has declined may actually pass these tests by simply "going through the motions" of driving, despite having limited ability to perform the more complex aspects of driving such as making appropriate judgements & decisions.
In contrast, the DORE features:
DORE is the scientific answer to determine the fitness to drive of experienced drivers.
